Hydrokultur kochen / Cooking planting granules

Der erste Duft von Frühling ist in der Luft, obwohl man es noch nicht wirklich sehen kann. Da ich in einer Wohnung lebe habe ich eine Menge von Topfpflanzen und nun kurz vor dem Frühling ist die ideale Zeit um sie umzutopfen und zurück zu schneiden. Ich habe die meisten meiner Pflanzen in der Seramis Hydrokultur, weil es leichter ist sie am Leben zu erhalten, weil im Gegensatz zu meiner Katze nicht kommen um mich zu ärgern, wenn sie hungrig sind.

Letztes Jahr habe ich zum ersten Mal diesen Trick ausprobiert und er funktioniert ganz gut. Hydrokultur hat die Tendenz ein wenig staubig und/oder schimmelig zu werden oder Kalk zu sammeln. Deshalb sollte man sie dann und wann austauschen, vor allem wenn man die Pflanze umtopft. Aber ich dachte, die Alte ist noch zu schön um sie wegzuwerfen, und außerdem habe ich mir noch ein bisschen Geld gespart.

Also hier sind die Schritte, um das Hydrokultur Granulat oder die Perlen zu desinfizieren:

1. Zuerst die Pflanze aus dem Topf ziehen, indem man die Hälfte des Granulats in einen Kochtopf gießt und danach die Pflanze herausnimmt. Dann den Rest des Granulats in den Kochtopf geben und mit Wasser füllen, bis es das Granulat bedeckt.
2. Die Pflanze daweil in einen Topf mit Wasser bei Raumtemperatur geben.
3. Den Topf mit dem Granulat auf den Ofen stellen und das Wasser zum Kochen bringen. Dafür unbedingt lüften, da ein eher erdiger Geruch entsteht.
4. Sobald es kocht, das Wasser auf eine niedrige Temperatur schalten und es für 15 Minuten köcheln lassen.
5. Inzwischen die Pflanze abduschen und die Blätter reinigen.
6. Danach das Wasser vom Granulat durch ein Sieb abschütten, die Wurzeln die noch drin sind herausklauben und noch einmal mit kaltem Wasser durchspülen.
7. Wenn das Granulat abgekühlt ist, die Hälfte des neuen Blumentopfes auffüllen.
8. Wenn die Wurzeln Deiner Pflanze verknotet sind, kann man sie ein wenig auseinanderziehen und die abgestorbenen Wurzeln entfernen.
9. Danach die Pflanze auf das Granulat stellen und den Blumentopf dann auffüllen.
10. Jetzt noch eine halbe Tasse Wasser mit etwas Dünger mischen und dazu geben.
11. Dann noch einen neuen Wasserstandanzeiger dazu tun und den Topf etwas sauber machen.

So, the first smell of spring is in the air, even though it’s not really visible just yet. Since I live in an apartment, I have a lot of potted plants and just before spring is the ideal time to replant them and cut them back if needed. I keep most of my plants in the Seramis hydroculture, because that way when life gets busy, I don’t kill them, because unlike my cat they don’t come to annoy me when they are hungry.

Last year just before I moved I tried out this little trick, that I want to show you today. Hydroculture has a tendency to get a bit dusty and/or moldy or shows limescale. So every now and then you should exchange the hydroculture, especially when repotting the plant. But I thought it was too good to just throw away and I saved myself some cash while doing it.

So here are the steps to disinfect the hydroculture granules or pearls:

1. Put the plant into a pot of room temperature water.
2. Carefully pull out the plant, by first pouring out the top of the granules into a cooking pot and then take out the plant and put the rest of the granules in to pot as well.
3. Put the pot of granules on the stove and let the water come to a boil. You should air your room while doing this, because it develops a rather musty smell.
4. As soon as it boils, turn it down and let it steep for 15 minutes.
5. Meanwhile you can shower down the plant and clean the leaves a little.
6. Pour out the granules through a sieve and remove any roots that may be in there and give them another rinse with cold water.
7. When they are cool, fill half the new pot with the granules.
8. If the roots of your plant are all knotted up, take them apart a little and take out the dead roots.
9. Now put the plant onto the granules and then fill up the pot.
10. Pour in half a cup of water with some fertilizer.
11. Add a new indicator and clean up the pot a little.
